The Penguin That Roared

The Penguin That Roared

This entertaining illustration accompanied the 1998 San Francisco Chronicle article The Penguin That Roared by David Einstein. This was the same year the term “open source” was introduced by Bruce Perens et al (Eric Raymond). Note the incorrect usage of the term “freeware”.

The state of collaborative software

Collaborative software and its uses is one of the areas I’m personally quite interested in. Have you heard of real-time collaborative editors?
I’ve experimented with real-time collaborative text editors going back to at least 2006 (starting with MoonEdit). This was precisely the reason I was not impressed by Google Doc’s initial concurrent editing functionality, even though [...]

Annoyance of the year: overriding copy/paste functionality using JavaScript

I got a bit annoyed with NoScript last week due to the continous white-listing while randomly surfing the web, so I reluctingly decided to pick the dangerous Allow Scripts Globally option. However, this has introduced me to an annoyance far greater and that is: websites overriding copy/paste functionalty using JavaScript.
Yes, this is actually possible and [...]

Usability disaster: Videos from CNN

Usability disaster: Videos from CNN

Apart from the fact that CNN’s video site just isn’t very interesting (for now I won’t go into reasons why), it also has a few minor issues that combined make for a genuine usability disaster.
————————————————————————————————————-
Problem #1: When a video is done playing, all player functionality is disabled and after a few seconds the player automatically [...]

Doacracy over democracy. Actions matter more than opinions.

Solar panels for lease: a win for the company, the environment and the consumer

I stumbled on this video about the leasing by solar companies of solar panels in California while reading an interesting article about Dave Chameides (also known as Sustainable Dave) and his year long experiment to figure out what things one can do to help the environment without drastically changing your entire lifestyle (basically, amass less [...]

Disabling a PPA and downgrading all related packages

After installing the Karmic beta (more on that later) and subsequently reinstalling Jaunty, all of a sudden I’m having some odd problems with my multi-monitor setup that I did not have before. That last point is what makes it so annoying.
This despite the fact that I personally haven’t touched anything else. I’m using the [...]

The evolution of graphics in racing games

The evolution of graphics in racing games

A contributor on the RaceSimCentral (RSC) forums by the nickname of HighGear_IceMan has posted an extensive series of comparisons on the evolution of graphics in some of the most popular racing games:

Screamer, Moto Racer, Ford Racing and Test Drive Off Road
Psygnosis F1, Lankhor F1 and NASCAR Racing
V-Rally, Sega Rally and Rally Championship
ISI/EA F1, Ubisoft [...]

Due dates in Remember the Milk

I’ve decided I want to get more effective and start settings goals and then follow through on realizing them. No more messing about! One of the steps includes getting more organized and start managing my tasks.
To make it more comfortable to create tasks I’ve started using the GNOME Do plugin for Remember the Milk (an [...]

Human knowledge belongs to the world!

Human knowledge belongs to the world!

I was talking with Mike Trausch yesterday (among other things he’s the developer of AllTray) and during the conversation we started talking about tech movies. I mentioned the excellent Pirates of Sillicon Valley and Mike in turn said his personal favorite was Antitrust. I hadn’t seen Antitrust before and after watching it I have [...]

Customized the styling for WP-Syntax

I wanted to post a diff earlier today so I started by looking for a WordPress plugin that would integrate a syntax highlighter, I quickly found in the form of WP-Syntax which utilizes GeSHi (a server side syntax highlighter). However, turns out the default Hybrid theme applies an ugly background image to any pre [...]

What’s the deal with custom backgrounds?

I’m quite content with using Identi.ca, a microblogging service that runs on top of the open source microblogging engine Laconica, where thankfully custom backgrounds are just not done (no patches please). On that other microblogging site however, you know the anti-freedom one, that’s most definitely not the case. Some folks have even build an entire [...]

Fixing the IndustrialTango theme

I’ve been using IndustrialTango for years now and am stuck in my ways. Now that I’ve switched from Metacity to Compiz an ugly issue with Industrial Tango’s window border theme reared its head, for every window the window icon on the top left would not display. Instead of switching to a different window border theme [...]

The little things

It’s pretty nifty how in summary view WordPress will (sometimes?) take the first image encountered and use it as a thumbnail and even automatically crops it.

TODO:

I have a post where I had added an image and later removed it, Wordpress still uses this image as a thumbnail (click on one of the associated tags to [...]

Drupal, oh how I miss thee

I wish WordPress had a URL alias system like Drupal does. Now with WordPress it seems you can’t update the post title or change the permalink scheme without breaking all previous links
Why did I actually choose WordPress over Drupal? It may have had something to do with that word that starts with a u and [...]

Analyzing text for repeating segments

While writing one of the previous blog posts it occurred to me that I was using “Even though” quite a few times (now corrected).
“Even though it’s a little bit slower on my system”
“I haven’t yet actually used the Expose plugin, even though I do organize things using virtual desktops. “
“Even though I’m hoping for more [...]

Wordpress hybrid edit mode

I wish WordPress would support some hybrid mode which would allow you to directly use HTML in visual mode. I think Atlassian’s Confluence actually supports this kind of thing.

Modes and remembering state

It’s quite cool how WordPress remembers what mode (Visual versus HTML) you were previously in and the size of the editor when writing a blog post .

GNOME Do’s advanced text entry mode

Dear Lazyweb, is it just me or does GNOME Do’s advanced text entry (<.>) mode still seem severely limited? It doesn’t seem to support text cursor movement, selection and I can use only a single line break at a time. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t just use a stylized multi-line GtkEntry widget (or possibly [...]

Organizing content is just as important as creating it, if not more so
